Free Aviator Crochet Hat Pattern

How adorable is this aviator crochet hat pattern? I made this one a few years back and have made many since! Here is a free pattern for beginners, or the experienced crocheter. Don't know how to crochet? Size: Newborn

Gauge: 12 sts, 7 rows = 4” in dc with H (5mm) Hook

Materials:


H crochet Hook (5.00MM)
Tapestry Needle
80 yards Worsted Weight (4-medium weight) Yarn
Main Color (Gold/Tan Mix)

Abbreviation Guide:
St = Stitch
Sl st = Slip Stitch
DC = Double Crochet
SC = Single Crochet
Ch = Chain
RD = Round

How to read this pattern: This pattern is worked in rounds, each round is joined with a slip stitch.

Instructions:
HAT
With Main Color:
Ch 4, sl st in 1st ch to make a ring
RD 1: Ch 2, 13 dc into ring
RD 2: Ch 2, 2 dc in each st around
RD 3: Ch 2, dc in the same st, *1 in next st, 2 in next st* repeat around
RD 4-9: Ch 2, 1 dc in each st around

EARFLAP #1:
With Main Color:
RD 1: Sl st. in the next 5 sts, ch 2 and dc in same st, dc in next 6 sts, Turn
RD 2: Ch 2, dc in each st to end, turn
RD 3: Ch 2, dc in each st to end. Tie off & weave in ends.

FRONT FLAP:

RD 1: Attach in next st after earflap#1 & ch 2, dc in same st, dc in next 11 sts, turn
RD 2-3: Ch 2, dc in same st and each st to end of row, turn
RD 4: Ch 2, dc in same st and each st to end of row. Tie off & weave in ends.

EARFLAP #2:
With Main Color:
RD 1: Attach in next st after front flap & ch 2, dc in same st, dc in next 6 sts, Turn
RD 2: Ch 2, dc in each st to end, turn
RD 3: Ch 2, dc in each st to end. Tie off & weave in ends.

EDGING
With Contrasting Color:
Attach on one side of the front flap with contrasting color, and sc all the way around earflaps and hat until you reach the other side of the front flap. Tie off & weave in ends.

Fold FRONT FLAP up towards the top of the hat and attach to hat to hold in place. Use a tapestry needle and the same color yarn you used for the front flap. Add buttons if you wish to the sides of the front flap.
