I spotted a hanging cabinet on the sidewalk that one of my neighbors was getting rid of with a big FREE sign. It didn't take long for the wheels in my head to start turning :)
I got some FREE paint from Ace (They were giving away 1 small sample sized paint can per person, so I grabbed my hubby and headed out) We got one can of white paint and one can of a light mint/teal color.
Here is the before and after picture! :)
Materials:
Clark + Kengsington Paint & Primer in one (white & little sprout)
Paint Brushes
Sandpaper
Cabinet knobs
A special thanks to my little brother for helping me paint this! :) He was in town visiting and it seemed like a fun thing we would both enjoy. He is awesome.
General Tips:
- DO NOT paint on top of newspaper....it sticks ;) HAHA...oops!
- Make sure you sand it before you paint...and that you also prime (my paint was a paint and primer in one)
- Take the doors off to paint because I painted over the hardware on the sides.
- Make sure you wait for the paint to dry in between coats
Directions:
First, we took off the hardware and sanded the cabinet a little bit so that the paint would stick better.
Next, we painted the cabinet with the white. We waited for it to dry and took a water break ;) It is HOT in AZ
Then, we went back to it and painted the coat with the mint/greensh/teal color. After, we headed inside and let it dry.
Last, I added new cabinet knobs. The original ones were really light plastic and the new ones I found were really cute and sturdy metal.
If you have any questions please feel free to leave a comment and I will get back to you as soon as I can. If you use this tutorial please send a picture of your results, I'd love to see your before and after pictures!
Protective Finish (optional):
P.S. I wasn't too worried about sealing this piece since it is up high and won't get a lot of use. But if you want a good seal here is a great product to use on top of the paint once it dries.

totally beautiful! the color you picked complements the walls nicely.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much! :) I LOVE this color, it seems to match everything.
DeleteHave you found the paint scratches off easily? Been thinking about doing this to my daughters furniture, she wants a more teen room but can't afford to buy new furniture. This would change the look of perfectly working furniture.
ReplyDeleteThis piece doesn't have much wear on it as I don't move it or put things on it really, but I just added a protective finish recommendation at the bottom of the post, you can click on the picture to purchase from Amazon. Thanks for the idea to add that. I think revamping what you already have is a great way to personalize furniture and save some caSh! :)
