So my good friend/old neighbor Katie from our old Air Force base taught me how to make this delicious Challah bread after she made some and we fell in love with it. It was SO delicious!!
What you need:
**Note** This is a double batch (2 loaves)
5 tsp dry active yeast
1 3/4 cups warm water
2/3 cup sugar
5 eggs (+1 more for egg wash)
1 1/2 tbsp salt
1/2 cup veggie oil
4 tbsp honey
Directions:
1. Combine 5 tsp dry active yeast with 1 3/4 cups warm water (100-110 degrees) & add sugar. It should start to foam after 5 minutes or so. That's how you will know the yeast is activated. Then continue.
2. Add the 5 eggs, 1 1/2 tbsp salt, 1/2 cup veggie oil, ad the 4 tbsp honey.
3. Add the flour one cup at a time. You can either stir or knead the flour into the mixture. If you are kneading, make sure you use plenty of flour so it doesn't stick to the counter. I added the full 8 1/2 cups but it may be different depending on different weather conditions/ etc. It should still be pretty sticky when you finish this, but it should cling away from the edges of the bowl.
4. Grease another bowl that is a little larger and cover with a clean towel or caran wrap - let it rise in a warm place for at least 1 1/2 or 2 hours. You could let it rise overnight but I didn't have time.
5. It should be just about double in size now, and you will flip it over, punch it, flatten it, cover again and let it rise for another hour.
6. Flour the counter and dump out the dough. Split it in half (each will be one loaf)
7. Split the one loaf in half (then in 3rds) and roll out into equal lengths and sizes. Make sure you use plenty of flour and don't let them stick to the counter! You want 6 strands for each loaf.
8. Now, time to braid the loafs!! :D
Below is a video I made on my YouTube channel that shows how to braid the bread in 6 strands. If you have any questions, feel free to comment below and I will get back to you as soon as I can!
